Dancers Wanted!

Danse Libre brings history to life, by choreographing and performing dances of the Victorian (1840s-1850s) and Ragtime (1910s) eras, the 1920s, the 1930s, and occasionally other periods as well. We aspire to create a vivid picture of the mayhem and joyful passion of the lively dance halls of days gone by. Distributed among our current membership is a wealth of experience in both period costuming and a wide variety of social dance forms. We rehearse period dances every Monday evening in Palo Alto. We perform for festivals, concerts, organizations and charity events throughout the Bay Area.

We are in search of friendly, experienced social dancers to complement our current membership.

Key Skills

Turning waltz

Polka or One Step

Friendly, social personality

Physical stamina

Exuberance and stage presence

Aptitude for learning steps and choreographies

Strong desire to perform

Positive and patient attitude

Commitment

Our repertoire is large (and growing), and our membership is small. We are dependent on a strong commitment to attending weekly rehearsals in order to maintain and expand our repertoire—dancers commit to a full dance season from October 2013 to June 2014. Rehearsals run from 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM every Monday in Palo Alto. Each dancer is responsible for their own costuming, in addition to a yearly membership fee that helps cover the costs of rehearsal space.

How to Audition

First, fill out an audition form. Bring the form with you to the first round of auditions, Monday, September 30 at 7:30 PM at La Entrada Middle School, 2200 Sharon Road, Menlo Park, CA. We'll teach you the first half of two separate dances, and give you a chance to dance with current and former members of the group. Selected individuals will be asked back for a second round of auditions at Monday, October 7 at 7:30 PM. There we'll complete the choreographies and give you a chance to perform. We want to see you shine on stage!

We’d also love to hear that you’re interested and planning on auditioning. Please email auditions2013@danselibre.org to let us know to expect you.
